I received a promotion into my first management job with Hewlett-Packard a few decades ago. Going into it, I expected my new position would be easy... that I'd be able to coast through my work and maybe even play a few rounds of golf during the week.

All Organizational Processes
Have Two Critical Parts...
In all my years of working directly with hundreds of organizations around the world, I've discovered a unique dichotomy of skills within every company and at all levels of management. That is, there are two parts to the success of any organizational process. One is what I call the "Hard Part"; the other is the "Soft Part."
What exactly do I mean?
Simply this. In any process, there are two areas on which you must focus. The "Hard Part" includes tools, processes, structures, procedures, systems, and performance measurements. The "Soft Part," on the other hand, includes creativity, concerns, resistance, excitement, buy-in, and the attitudes of the employees who actually do the hard part.

As the illustration shows, the hard part is all about management and the soft part is all about leadership — bringing out the best in people. Most people are thoroughly trained in management, but receive little development in leadership. Which brings up an important point...
People Don't Quit Jobs...
They Quit Managers!
Most people who quit don't actually quit their jobs. They quit their managers.
In survey after survey, it's been discovered that a manager's leadership skills can determine whether employees stay or leave. A manager who is very good at managing... but poor at leading... may cause a number of employees to go in search of greener pastures. What's worse, you might never know the real reason they left.
In fact, this is why I left HP. I had worked there 12 years, loved the company, and STILL left because I was promoted into a position where I was working for a bad manager.
